Nissan Car Key Replacement: What Type of Key Does Your Nissan Use?
Not every Nissan key is the same, and the replacement process varies significantly depending on the year and model you drive. Older Nissan models — certain early Altimas and Frontiers, for example — use a basic metal key with no electronics. Replacing one is straightforward. Most Nissans from the mid-2000s onward, however, use transponder keys, which contain a small chip that must be programmed to match your vehicle's immobilizer system. If the chip is not programmed correctly, the engine will crank but refuse to start, even with a perfectly cut blade.
Then there are Nissan Intelligent Key fobs — the push-to-start proximity devices used on newer Rogues, Maximas, Muranos, Pathfinders, and many other models. These require both cutting (for the internal emergency blade) and electronic programming. Our technicians carry the diagnostic and programming hardware needed to handle all of these on-site, without towing your vehicle anywhere. We can also replace or re-program a lost secondary fob so that your spare works alongside a newly programmed primary key.
